Henrico County Acknowledged Black Men Read

Recently Henrico County acknowledged Black Men Read as we helped sponsor two events at our partner school, Highland Springs High School (Highland Springs, VA).  The first was a Poetry Workshop led by Roscoe Burnems, performance poet, mentor and Founder of the Writer’s Den Poetry Slam Team.  The Writer’s Den Poetry Slam Team is Richmond’s premier poetry slam experience which holds performance poetry competitions the last Wednesday of the month. The Writer’s Den Slam team has sent teams to regional and national competitions since 2014 and are currently ranked top 10 in the South.

Black Men Read also had the privilege to help send over 200 students to go see a private screening of “The Hate U Give”, the screen adaptation of the New York Times Bestseller written by Angie Thomas.  It was an awesome experience and from the oohs and ahhs especially when Chris met Big Mav, I would say all of the kids loved the experience.  This trip wouldn’t have been possible without Black Men Read’s donors.  We held a fundraiser just for this event and you came through with over $500!  This money was given to the school to help cover the cost of tickets and school buses to transport the children.  Thank you so much!

Our library contacts wrote an article to submit to the county school system’s newsletter and you can read the article here:
“Beyond The Shelf: Authentic and Connected Learning Opportunities.”

We absolutely love the staff and students at Highland Springs High School and can’t wait for you to see what we do next!
